The impact of care at the Love in Action (LIA) Free Medical & Dental Center is evident in the story of a local, uninsured contractor with lack of options. He sought help at the LIA Free Medical and Dental Center for persistent sores that were treated previously at another provider. During his appointment, an LIA Nurse Practitioner took the time to listen attentively as the man shared other seemingly unrelated symptoms. Her careful listening and medical expertise led to the suspicion of a deeper issue: diabetes. Subsequent
laboratory testing confirmed this diagnosis.
This story has a bright ending, but the journey to wellness wasn’t solely about medical treatment. Due to past negative experiences, the man was understandably hesitant about medication. Compassionate volunteer nurses and medical providers at the
Medical Center patiently worked to build trust in subsequent visits, walking alongside his treatment journey listening to his questions and explaining the whys behind treatment with empathy and understanding. An educator from Trinity Health
responded to a request for greater support, stepping in to provide personalized coaching at LIA.
The results over the next several months were remarkable as the man worked with the team, followed recommendations and returned to health. Staff also worked with him to help him find insurance options. This man’s journey from illness and resistance to health and trust is a testament to the power of compassionate, whole-person, caring support through dedicated staff and volunteer medical professionals of the LIA Free Medical & Dental Center.
