My husband and I are at this unique stage of life where we have time on our hands and wanted to do something good with it. Two years ago a friend told me about Love in Action, so I applied to be a volunteer.
I was so impressed by the interview process, they really want to make sure you’re a good fit for the role and your heart is in the right place. On my first day of volunteering, I saw a “thank you volunteers” on the outdoor sign, and I have truly felt valued every day since.
As a receptionist, we get every phone call that comes through no matter the scenario whether it’s for housing, a food voucher, a clinic appointment, or even just a listening ear. I never know what the day will bring, but I always leave knowing I helped someone.
As a client advisor for the Housing Ministry Collaborative, I have the opportunity to get to know people even further as I listen to their stories. Often times there’s hurting, and anxiety when they come in and we gently talk through that together. I’m able to provide a sense of hope as I provide additional resources that may alleviate expenses and burdens. Even if it’s not a Love in Action resource, whatever is best for the person in front of us.
I love when people tell me “thank you”; I am honored to be the conduit between a generous community and the people that need help. I appreciate being a part of Love in Action, and the connection we have with area churches, other non-profits, local area businesses, and the community. To be in this seat and look out and see all our community does for each other is truly heartwarming.
Thank you to volunteers like Paula Kramer who have kindness and compassion as they walk alongside our neighbors in times of need.
